I recently learned to appreciate the good quality and value of Hanes t-shirts. Probably like many guys out there, I take undershirts for granted not really giving them much thought...aren't they all the same anyway?
Nooooooo, they're not. I would guess that Hane's main competitor would be Fruit of the Loom since the price is similar and both can be found next to each other at your local department store. I bought FOTL recently because the 5-pack caught my eye and I thought the price was good. I didn't stop to think that it would be any different than the Hanes I normally wear. Long story short, FOTL is giving me a refund but I wanted to write a review to give you a comparison on a brand new Hanes crew-neck Tee and a similar Fruit of the Loom crew-neck Tee.
Both white T-shirts are brand new, have never been worn and size large. Both were washed and dried on the same settings only once. When laid out side to side, the Hanes T-shirt is noticeably whiter. There is no drastic difference in thickness or weave that I can notice. Both shirts, thankfully, are tagless. The Fruit of the Loom tee seems more prone to wrinkling. Both are 100% cotton and they did shrink somewhat. The FOTL shrank slightly more than the Hanes but not drastically so. I washed in warm water and dried on delicate setting which for my dryer seems about medium heat.
The comparison between collars is like night and day. The Hanes collar has a width of 1 inch compared to 3/4 inch on FOTL. The outside of the Hanes t-shirt around the collar reveals 2 lines of stitching. Inside, the material lays nice and flat against my upper chest. Inside the FOTL, the collar and shirt is single stitched along the edge where shirt meets collar and is gathered in such a way that it actually forms a tent shape, thus it does not lay flush against my chest. Also, the FOTL shows gaps around the collar where the material was not properly smoothed out before being sewn (pinched). The stitching on top of shoulder area is visibly more durable on the Hanes as well.
Another obvious difference is the size of the neck hole. The diameter of the neck hole on Fruit of the Loom is a whopping two inches larger than the Hanes t-shirt. If my other t-shirts stretch out that far they get turned into dust rags so I'm surprised to see such a huge difference here. Even if you have a big head and neck, the collar on the Hanes is constructed so much better that it can handle some abuse and snap back into shape.
My Hanes Tees have always provided great comfort and fit around the neckline without sagging and the collar always looks good. The FOTL collar is already curling on itself after only 1 washing. I did happen to wear one of my new FOTL shirts and the collar is so weak that it forms what looks like piping around my neck instead of a collar. NO THANKS!!
For me, Hanes is the obvious winner when compared to Fruit of the Loom. There obviously might be better undershirts out there but if you have a choice between Hanes and FOTL, I recommend Hanes. They are whiter, long lasting and where it really counts...a good collar that won't roll up and sag. I've worn Fruit of the Loom in the past and I can tell you that their quality USED to be much better but the quality of Hanes has been consistently good for many years. Since there is not a big cost difference, Hanes is my pick for an all-around great t-shirt.
