(More customer reviews)This shirt absolutely astonished me when I found it! Not only does it have y Ddraig Goch (the Red Dragon of Wales), it features part of a medieval Welsh poem in manuscript type in the original Middle Welsh! What it does not tell you in the product description is which poem it features. The lines are from the Kat Godeu (sometimes written Cad Goddeu, as in Ford's Mabinogi and Other Welsh Tales). The lines start at the beginning "Bum yn lliaws rith/ kyn bum disgyfrith... etc." (I was in a multitude of forms before I was unfettered...). The title of the poem is usually rendered 'Battle of the Trees' and it is considered a major source for important works from Shakespeare's men disguised as trees scene in MacBeth (extending the bard's debt to Welsh material beyond Cymbeline, Lear and Puck) to Tolkien's Ent assault on Isengard. It is a significant poem in the history of western literature, though very cryptic. Written in the voice of Taliesin, the poem appropriates the mantle of the great 6th century poet and icon of Welsh poetry. The shirt itself is a very nice t-shirt, but it is the graphic adornment which truly sets it apart. Certain to appeal to fans of medieval literature, Tolkien, Shakespeare, Wales, poetry, dragons, mythology or ancient languages. A very unique item, my thanks to its clever designer(s)!
